Muscarelle Museum of Art

With this new facility, the museum will elevate the level and caliber of engagement and connection to the visual arts, enhancing the university’s academic mission. The new space will serve as a laboratory grounded in hands-on experience and will invigorate a dynamic arts culture on campus.

The museum will play a critical role in presenting diverse ideas and experiences by encouraging the examination of complex issues through an artistic lens. From seminars and artist receptions to art history lectures and detailed object study, this new space will provide a wide range of opportunities for students and the community to engage directly with faculty and professionals from a variety of fields.

The addition of more than 42,000 square feet will triple the current building and expand our galleries of art, increase opportunities for research and offer more flexible spaces for teaching, studying and public events. Exciting additions include:

• Enhanced and expanded gallery spaces, tripling the exhibition capacity
• Event hall with lecture seating for 200 and banquet seating for 100 people as well as event catering space
• Welcoming front courtyard for outdoor gatherings
• Open, light-filled atrium with a grand staircase to second-floor galleries and event seating for 80 people
• Seminar rooms for exploring works of art and research
• Open study/library room with movable partitions
• Much needed art storage and staff office space

With your help, the Muscarelle Museum of Art will be a premiere place for the collection, preservation and presentation of compelling art to educate, inspire and engage the W&M community.

As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Muscarelle, we are honoring the vision and perseverance of the founding leaders who brought the museum into existence. With our planned renewal, made possible by the generous lead gift of Martha Wren Briggs ’55, we will position the museum for another 40+ years of cultural impact at William & Mary.
